Sri Yantra, Mandala, and Chakra Thangka are three different forms of Tibetan Buddhist art, each offering unique insights into the spiritual realm through their intricate designs and profound symbolism. While they share common elements, these Thangkas differ in their visual representations and the spiritual concepts they convey.
Sri Yantra Thangka, a Tantric tool, is an ancient geometric pattern comprising nine interlocking triangles, surrounded by a lotus motif and enclosed within a square. These triangles form 43 smaller triangles, each representing a distinct aspect of existence. This configuration symbolises the cosmos, the union of divine masculine and feminine energies, and the path to enlightenment. The harmonious interplay of the triangles signifies the spiritual balance necessary for achieving a heightened state of consciousness. The lotus petals enveloping the triangles symbolise purity and spiritual awakening, whereas the square, known as the Bhupura, signifies the earthly realm. This geometric configuration delineates the multilayered journey from the physical world to the attainment of spiritual transcendence.
Mandala Thangka, in contrast, depicts circular designs representing the universe, psychic order and the cyclic nature of existence. These Thangkas often feature deities, spiritual scenes, and intricate patterns that reflect various aspects of the enlightened mind. Mandalas serve as visual aids for meditation, guiding one's focus through different levels of consciousness to foster a deeper understanding of Buddhist teachings.
Chakra Thangka, meanwhile, illustrates the energy centres within the human body according to traditional Indian medicine and spirituality. These Thangkas display a series of circular diagrams, each representing a specific chakra, its associated colour, and the corresponding deity or symbol. Chakra Thangkas aim to elucidate the connection between the physical and subtle energy systems, facilitating a holistic understanding of human well-being.
