Thangka painting depicts Buddhist deity Chenrezig, the embodiment of the compassion of all the Buddhas. Of all the Buddhist deities, the bodhisattva Chenrezig, is one of the most celebrated. He is the lord endowed with complete illumination, who refrains from entering the blissful state of nirvana to remain on Earth and help its inhabitants.

Chenrezig, has a very special connection with Tibetans as their protector and patron deity. His sacred mantra is Om Mani Padme Hum. It is an ancient mantra that is related to the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara, and with therefore the Dalai Lama, who is considered to be an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara. In China Avalokitesvara is depicted in a female form known as Quan Yin.
