Client Advisory: Tibetan Thangka & Mandala Art
Gammas Art Gallery is dedicated to providing collectors, interior architects, and spiritual practitioners with unparalleled access to Himalayan masterworks. Our Curatorial Advisory team has compiled the following insights to assist you in understanding the provenance, acquisition, framing, and preservation of our museum-grade collection.
Provenance, Materials & Monastic Heritage
What is a Tibetan Thangka?
Thangka is an ancient form of Tibetan Buddhist art that has been practiced and preserved in the Himalayan region for over two millennia. Translating to "recorded message," a Thangka is a profoundly complex visual map of enlightenment. These masterworks combine strict iconometric discipline with spiritual philosophy, serving as sacred conduits for meditation and historical preservation. Authentic, premium-quality Thangkas are rarely reproduced today, making them highly sought-after investment pieces.
What is the provenance of the Gammas collection?
Every masterwork in our archive is sourced directly from the historical birthplaces of Vajrayana art: Nepal, Tibet, North India, and Bhutan. Most of our pieces are strictly curated and hand-painted by devoted Nepalese and Tibetan monastic artisans (Lamas), who are the original, initiated lineage holders of these sacred painting traditions.
What materials and pigments are used in authentic masterworks?
To achieve museum-grade quality and longevity, our artists use paint derived exclusively from precious and semi-precious ground minerals, crystals, and botanicals. These include lapis lazuli, cinnabar, azurite, malachite, coral, and pearl—materials historically revered for their energetic properties. The artist grinds the minerals into a fine powder, binding them with natural hide glue and water to ensure the colours remain incredibly vibrant for centuries. The final illumination is executed using pure 24-carat gold and sterling silver.
How is the acquisition of a Thangka valued?
The valuation of a Thangka is determined by its iconographic complexity, exact dimensions, and the rarity of the mineral pigments applied. Because our artisans adhere strictly to historical methods, an average piece requires two to six months of dedicated daily painting to complete. Acquisitions through Gammas Art Gallery range from several hundred to several thousand Euros, representing exceptional value for original, investment-grade monastic craftsmanship.

Spiritual Significance & Spatial Harmony
What is the spiritual importance of Thangka and Mandala art?
For centuries, these artworks have held paramount religious and artistic value. They serve as powerful visual aids for advanced meditation, allowing practitioners to focus their minds and visualize the divine qualities of enlightened beings. Beyond personal practice, they act as spiritual anchors that preserve and transmit the esoteric wisdom of the Dharma.
How do these artworks influence spatial harmony and architecture?
Our collections are frequently acquired by interior architects and wellness practitioners to elevate the energetic frequency of a space. Thangkas and Mandalas utilize flawless sacred geometry, which naturally aligns with spatial philosophies such as Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui. Placing an authentic Mandala in a home, office, or private sanctuary acts as a protective focal point, historically utilized to dispel negative energies and attract profound balance and abundance.

Curatorial Care, Framing & Preservation
Are the masterworks sold framed?
To ensure the safest possible transit and to respect the traditional methods of the Himalayas, all our original paintings are sold and shipped unframed.
What are the dimensions of the paintings?
Because every piece is entirely hand-painted, all dimensions are unique. The measurements quoted on our website represent the inner dimensions (the actual painted area). Each canvas features an additional unpainted border of approximately 5 to 10 centimeters (1.9 to 3.9 inches). This border is essential for the stretching and framing process and will be hidden once the piece is professionally mounted.
How should a Thangka be framed and preserved?
While traditionally mounted in silk brocade, modern curators and collectors often prefer contemporary framing. We highly recommend consulting a professional framer to stretch the canvas and mount it using acid-free matboards. To protect the 24k gold and mineral pigments from degradation, you must use UV-protective, non-reflective museum glass. Ensure the artwork is hung away from direct, harsh sunlight or extreme humidity to guarantee its longevity.
How do you properly hang a Thangka or Mandala?
As objects of deep spiritual reverence, Thangkas should be hung respectfully. The ideal placement is at eye level or slightly higher, never on the floor or in inherently impure spaces. We recommend a sturdy hanging system (such as D-rings) and soft, dedicated gallery lighting to highlight the reflective brilliance of the 24k gold detailing.

Global Acquisition, Shipping & Customs
Do you offer secure international shipping?
Yes. Gammas Art Gallery facilitates secure, fully insured global transit. We have successfully delivered our masterworks to private collectors in over 30 countries worldwide without issue.
How is the artwork packaged for transit?
Understanding that this is a significant investment, your artwork is gently rolled and encased in a humidity-resistant, archival-grade protective hard tube. This mirrors traditional scroll storage and ensures your sacred art arrives in flawless condition.
What are the estimated shipping times?
We aim to have your acquisition delivered within 7 working days from the date of order. Please note that exact delivery dates may vary slightly depending on your global location and local customs clearance times. Full tracking is provided the moment the piece leaves our gallery.
How are international customs and import duties handled?
For collectors within the European Union, there are currently no customs duty charges. For international destinations, standard import duties (generally around 20% of the item's value, depending on your jurisdiction) may apply. The buyer is responsible for any customs duties incurred when the artwork enters their country. If you require specific logistical assistance regarding your country's import laws, our advisory team is available to help.
Is the online transaction and invoicing process secure?
Absolutely. All acquisitions are processed through heavily encrypted, bank-level security gateways. Gammas Art Gallery does not view, store, or retain any of your private credit card information. Upon acquisition, an official digital invoice and certificate of transaction will be automatically generated and emailed to you for your records. There are never any hidden fees.

Private Commissions & Advisory Services
Can I request a bespoke monastic commission?
Yes. Because our archive consists of unique, one-of-a-kind originals, a specific piece may occasionally be acquired by another collector before you can secure it. If your desired piece is no longer available, or if you require specific architectural dimensions or a rare Vajrayana deity, Gammas facilitates private commissions directly with our master artisans.
Do you provide spatial and interior design advisory?
We frequently collaborate with accredited energetic design consultants and interior architects. If you require guidance on selecting the correct Mandala or determining the optimal placement for a Thangka within your home or corporate space, we can connect you with specialized consultants.
Do you accommodate private gifting?
Yes. A museum-grade Thangka is an extraordinary gift of spiritual protection and high culture. If you are acquiring a piece for someone else, please contact us directly so we may arrange bespoke gifting options and ensure the presentation meets the highest standards.
